Bazalton is a relatively small sculpture garden with sculptures made from large basalt stones arranged in a circle. The name Bazalton comes from combining the words basalt and ton. The artist responsible for this creation is Dagan Shkalovski, who carved the sculptures using a chisel and hammer. When we visited, one of the sculptures, the "Peace Sculpture," was in the middle of being crafted, allowing us to see the stages of the sculpting process. Each sculpture has a fabric covering, enabling work in all weather conditions, and the time it takes to create each sculpture ranges from several months to years.
The creator of the garden is Dagan Shkalovski, who originally studied computers but was drawn to sculpting in stone. Without any special training, he began sculpting in rocks, initially as a second job, mainly working in the afternoons. At some point, Dagan decided to bring his sculptures to Ein Carmel, and since then, he has been sculpting only in the garden itself. Itโs worth noting that he works on-site, and visitors can always see a shaded work area where he is crafting his next sculpture.
The sculptures are what truly stand out; each one is unique. Dagan drew inspiration from various cultures around the world.
