New York is one of the largest and most influential cities in the world, a global hub for communication, politics, art, and culture. It stands as a symbol of diversity and opportunity for people all around the world.

Often called "the city that never sleeps" New York is full of energy and endless possibilities. I’m excited to share some helpful information I’ve gathered to guide you through this iconic city.

During my time exploring, I was struck by a quote from former Mayor Ed Koch: 

"I wake up every morning and say to myself, 'Well, I'm still in New York.' Thank you, God." 

This sentiment really captured the essence of the city.

For a budget-friendly view of the skyline, I recommend heading to Roosevelt Island. The view of the New York City skyline, both by day and night, offers stunning sights without the high price tag of the touristy cable cars.

1. Jersey Gardens

Jersey Gardens is an outlet mall located in New Jersey, about a 30-minute drive from Manhattan, depending on traffic. 

When it comes to discounts, the advertised savings of "up to 70%" are often misleading. The level of discount varies greatly depending on the season, time of year, or specific sale events. For example, while I found that a shirt from American Eagle at the outlet was priced the same as one in Times Square, I did score significant savings on children's shoes at Adidas.

To get there from Manhattan, take the bus from the Port Authority station at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. Line 111 departs from platform 223, and a one-way ticket costs $7, which can be purchased at the ticket counter. 

On your return journey, you'll need to buy your ticket from the driver, and note that they do not accept bills larger than $20.

2. The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was gifted to the United States by the French government in 1886 as a sign of friendship and became a central and important national site and a symbol of freedom and democracy. The French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi (Auguste Bartholdi) was chosen to carry out the task and after the completion of the statue, made of copper, it was placed on Liberty Island (Liberty Island) in New York City. In 1924, it was declared a site of national importance and, to this day, is one of the main symbols of the United States and a commercial symbol in the entire world.

Every day, thousands of people come to the site of the Statue of Liberty. Entrance to the statue is free, but the cruise to the island on which it stands is paid. The ticket can be bought in advance on the website of the cruise - Statue of Liberty Tickets & Tour Experiences - Statue City Cruises (cityexperiences.com). 

When planning your trip, it’s important to note that waiting times for the cruise to Liberty Island can be as long as an hour and a half. The Statue of Liberty stands at 93 meters tall, from the ground to the tip of the torch.

The statue depicts a woman, and her facial features are said to resemble those of the sculptor's mother. The current torch, which replaced the original in 1986, is made of copper and plated with 24-carat gold. The original torch is on display on the statue’s entrance floor.

Additionally, the plaque in the statue’s left hand displays the date of the United States' Independence Day in Roman numerals.

3. The National Memorial and Museum for the September 11 attacks

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City was established to honor those killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

At the heart of the memorial are two square reflecting pools, each spanning about 4,000 square meters. Their locations correspond to the footprints of the Twin Towers. Water cascades down the vertical granite walls of the pools, flowing over the edges into smaller square pools in the center.

Bronze railings surround the pools, engraved with the names of all the victims from the attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. 

The museum, located beneath the memorial plaza, is situated at the depth where the foundations of the original towers once stood. The exhibits cover the events of the attacks, including the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and explore the history leading up to that tragic day. Additionally, the museum features personal stories and photographs of the victims, as well as artifacts recovered from the towers.

4. Brooklyn Bridge

A visit to New York isn't complete without seeing the iconic Brooklyn Bridge! 

One of three bridges connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the city's most recognizable symbols. The bridge offers stunning views of the New York skyline, a sight that's truly breathtaking. 

You can access the bridge from both the Manhattan and Brooklyn sides, but I recommend starting from the Manhattan side (the entry point is shown in the video). Once you reach Brooklyn, take some time to explore the DUMBO neighborhood, which stands for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass."

The bridge is bustling with locals and tourists throughout the day, not just as a crossing point but also as a fantastic observation deck offering panoramic views of Manhattan's skyline and the waterfront. Along the bridge's path, you'll find souvenir stands and plenty of photographers capturing moments for TikTok.

For the best experience, try to start your walk before sunset, so you have time to enjoy the parks and take in the stunning views at golden hour.

5. New York Cruise

One of the highlights of any New York cruise is passing closely under the iconic Statue of Liberty. Since it's not easy or affordable to climb the statue itself, many visitors opt for the cruise, which provides an excellent opportunity to capture stunning photos of this landmark from the water.

There are several types of cruises in New York, offering a range of options and prices. I chose a cruise departing from Pier 36, and I found there’s a notable price difference between the upper and lower decks $10 more expensive for the upper deck. However, once the cruise begins and if there’s space available, you're welcome to head upstairs to the upper deck for better views and photo opportunities.

Whether you’re on the lower or upper deck, the cruise offers a great chance to get up close to the Statue of Liberty and experience breathtaking views of New York Harbor.

6. Chinatown

Chinatown is a vibrant neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, known for its large population of Chinese immigrants and its rich cultural character. Often referred to as "the Chinese city," it offers a truly immersive experience into Chinese culture.

The streets are lined with businesses featuring Chinese signage, and you'll find an abundance of massage parlors, Chinese grocery stores, herbal medicine shops, souvenir stalls, and markets selling everything from imitation bags and watches to traditional Chinese goods. Chinatown is also home to a wide variety of Chinese restaurants, offering every kind of Chinese cuisine imaginable.

The heart of Chinatown is the historic area at the intersection of Canal Street, Mott Street, Mulberry Street, and Pell Street. This bustling district is the most visited part of the neighborhood, filled with stalls, street vendors, and a lively atmosphere. Walking through the streets and exploring the diverse shops and food options is a great way to soak up the unique vibe of Chinatown.

7. Little Italy

Just across the street from Chinatown, you'll find Little Italy, a charming, mini neighborhood that's a must-visit. This small area transports you straight to Rome, with its vibrant atmosphere, red-and-white signage, and authentic Italian feel.

Walking through the streets of Little Italy, you'll be greeted by the sounds of Italian being spoken, the rich aroma of freshly baked bread and Italian dishes, and the bright, inviting signs of the many Italian restaurants. The entire neighborhood exudes warmth and authenticity, making it feel like you're stepping into a piece of Italy right in the heart of New York City.

I had the pleasure of dining at one of the local restaurants, where I enjoyed a pizza that tasted just like it came straight from a pizzeria in Italy. The flavors, the atmosphere, and the charm of Little Italy make it a truly special experience that should not be missed.

8. Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, one of Manhattan's most vibrant neighborhoods. It serves as a central courtyard for New York University, but it’s much more than just a campus space.

In the summer, the central plaza transforms into a fountain, attracting locals and visitors alike. The park is a lively hub for impromptu street performances, stand-up comedy, live music, breakdancing, and much more. It’s a perfect spot to relax, enjoy the lively atmosphere, or watch the creative energy of the city unfold.

On the north side of the park stands the iconic Washington Arch, a grand monument erected in 1899 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of George Washington's election as the first President of the United States. The arch is an impressive sight and one of the park's most notable features.

On sunny days, the park is bustling with students lounging on the benches or the grassy areas, reading, studying, or socializing. It’s always full of life, and the vibe of the park reflects the energetic and laid-back spirit of Greenwich Village.

9. Friends apartment

The building located in Greenwich Village is the iconic structure featured in the opening scenes of the famous TV series Friends. It’s the one you’ve probably seen in the transitions between scenes, with the colorful awning and the distinctive brownstone facade. Remarkably, the building looks almost identical to how it appeared on screen, maintaining its original charm.

When I visited, there was a long queue of fans eager to snap a photo with the building in the background. It’s a popular spot for Friends enthusiasts, so be prepared to wait a bit if you want to get that perfect shot! 😜 Even if you're not a fan of the show, it’s worth visiting for the unique vibe of the area and the nostalgic connection to such a beloved part of television history.

10. Little Island Park

This expansive park, built as a green oasis on pillars above the river, offers a perfect spot for family outings, music performances, and various attractions. It’s no longer just a flat concrete island—it's a stunning architectural creation. Its unique design resembles a leaf floating on the water, supported by columns that form a vibrant, flower-like structure. The park is covered with lush meadows, colorful flowers, and trees, making it a beautiful retreat in the heart of the city.

The park also features an amphitheater with 687 seats, where visitors can enjoy live music, dance performances, and other artistic events. With multiple observation points overlooking the river, it provides a serene atmosphere for both daytime relaxation and evening enjoyment. At night, the park is beautifully illuminated, with warm lighting adding to its magical ambiance.

11. Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market is a bustling indoor marketplace located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Housed in a former biscuit factory, the market has become one of the city’s top food destinations, offering a vibrant mix of artisanal foods, fresh produce, specialty items, and unique boutiques. Visitors can explore an array of gourmet options, from fresh seafood and tacos to artisanal cheeses, baked goods, and international cuisine.

Beyond food, Chelsea Market also features local shops selling handmade goods, home décor, and fashion. The market’s industrial-chic vibe, with its exposed brick walls and vintage signage, adds to the charm. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists to grab a bite to eat, shop for unique items, or just enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Located near the High Line and the Whitney Museum, Chelsea Market is easily accessible and offers a great place to spend a few hours exploring, eating, and shopping. Whether you're stopping for a quick snack or looking for something to take home, it's an essential stop in this trendy neighborhood.

12. High Line

The High Line is a unique park located in the southwest of Manhattan, New York, stretching 2.33 km along an abandoned elevated railway track. Running parallel to Tenth Avenue and near the Hudson River, the park connects the West Village to the south and Chelsea to the north. 

Originally used as a railway line during the first half of the 20th century, the tracks were abandoned as freight and passenger traffic declined. In 1999, a group of local residents proposed transforming the old railway into a park. With support from the city and government, substantial funding was allocated, and the first section of the park opened in 2006. The second section followed in 2009, with the final portion — offering views of the Empire State Building — still under development.

The success of the High Line has inspired other U.S. cities, like Philadelphia, Chicago, and St. Louis, to consider similar projects. Interestingly, it’s often more cost-effective to repurpose old tracks into green spaces than to demolish them. The High Line not only provides a scenic urban escape but also serves as a model for sustainable urban revitalization.

13. Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is one of New York’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of the city’s skyline. Located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, it was officially opened on May 1, 1931. For many years, it stood as the tallest building in the world, a title it held with pride.

At night, the building’s top is illuminated by colorful spotlights, creating a striking visual against the New York skyline. Though it was once the primary location to view the city from above, today, there are several other vantage points offering similar experiences, which are featured in this blog.

14. The Summit One observation

Summit One Vanderbilt is a remarkable new observation experience located in the heart of Manhattan. Opened in 2021, it is one of the city's most recent and exhilarating ways to take in panoramic views of New York. Situated on the 91st to 93rd floors of the One Vanderbilt building, it offers sweeping views of the city skyline, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the Hudson River.

What makes Summit One Vanderbilt stand out is its unique blend of art, technology, and design. Visitors are not only treated to stunning views, but also immersive exhibits and interactive elements that engage all the senses. The venue features glass floors, mirrored walls, and high-tech installations that allow you to experience the city in a truly distinctive way. The outdoor terraces also offer a breath of fresh air while you take in the breathtaking views.

15. Vessel

Vessel is a striking sculpture and landmark located in the Hudson Yards development on Manhattan’s west side. Its unique design resembles a beehive, with 154 staircases that span 16 stories and 80 levels, offering visitors the chance to climb approximately 2,500 steps. The structure stands as a centerpiece in the square of the Hudson Yards complex, providing panoramic views of the city.

The Vessel was created as part of a $200 million investment by the companies behind the Hudson Yards project, serving as both an architectural marvel and a public attraction. The structure was designed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick, and its intricate, honeycomb-like design invites visitors to explore its labyrinth of stairs, terraces, and platforms.

When I visited, the plaza around the Vessel was bustling with activity. They had lounge chairs set up for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings, and a large screen projected a live baseball game, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

16. Edge Sky View

Edge Skyview is one of the most exciting new attractions in New York, offering visitors an unparalleled view of the city from its outdoor glass-floored observation deck. Located at Hudson Yards, the Edge is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere, situated on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards.

Highlights:

• Spectacular Views: At 1,100 feet above the ground, Edge provides sweeping 360-degree views of Manhattan, including iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty.
• Glass Floor: For the more adventurous, you can step onto the glass floor to look straight down to the street below, offering a thrilling experience.

17. Times Square

When visiting New York City, no tourist experience is complete without a trip to Times Square, one of the most iconic locations in Manhattan. From a distance, the flashing neon lights and massive digital billboards will immediately catch your eye.

Famous for its illuminated advertisements and vibrant lights, Times Square was named after *The New York Times* newspaper, which moved its headquarters to the area in 1905. In reality, it is not a traditional square but a bustling district, stretching between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, and from 42nd to 47th streets.

One of the most significant events in Times Square is the New Year's Eve celebration. Each year, hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists gather to witness the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball drop. As the clock ticks down to midnight, the ball, adorned with hundreds of crystal triangles, descends along a giant iron pole, signaling the arrival of the New Year. The design of the crystal triangles changes every year, adding a fresh touch to the tradition. The ball's descent is often accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display, making it one of the most memorable moments of the year.

Throughout the year, Times Square is alive with street performances, food stalls, and surprises around every corner, offering something for everyone. Whether you're visiting during the day or at night, this dynamic area is always buzzing with energy, making it a must-see for anyone exploring New York City.

18. Intrepid Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located on the Hudson River in Manhattan, New York City, and is a must-visit for history, aviation, and military enthusiasts. Housed on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, the museum features an impressive collection of aircraft, spacecraft, and maritime exhibits.

The USS Intrepid itself is a legendary ship, serving as a WWII aircraft carrier and later participating in the Cold War and the space race. The museum is split into several areas, including the ship itself, an interactive space with a focus on the history of aviation, and the Space Shuttle Pavilion, which displays the Space Shuttle Enterprise—a retired NASA shuttle.

Visitors can explore the aircraft carrier, walk through the hangar deck, and view the many planes and helicopters that were once part of the Intrepid’s fleet. There are also fascinating exhibits on the history of the ship's missions and the lives of the men and women who served aboard it.

Another highlight is the Concorde, the famous supersonic passenger jet, which is also displayed at the museum. You can tour inside and learn about its groundbreaking technology and history.

Hours of operation typically run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with ticket prices varying depending on the exhibits you wish to see. The museum is accessible via public transportation and is located near other major New York attractions like Times Square and Central Park. It's a fantastic place to explore for those interested in military history, aviation, space exploration, and New York's maritime legacy.

19. The cable car to Roosevelt Island

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is one of New York City’s most unique and scenic forms of public transportation. It provides an aerial view of the city while taking passengers from the Upper East Side of Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, a small island in the East River, located between Manhattan and Queens.

The tram ride offers breathtaking views of the city’s skyline, including the iconic East River, Manhattan skyline, and famous landmarks such as the Chrysler Building and Queensboro Bridge. The entire journey takes about 4-5 minutes, and the cars are suspended high above the river, providing an unforgettable perspective of the city.

The cable car consists of two cars moving back and forth on two parallel cables.

Pro Tip: While the tram ride is short, it’s highly recommended to take it during daylight hours or sunset for the best views. And if you’re visiting in summer, try to sit on the side facing the Manhattan skyline for the best picture opportunities.

20. Central Park

Central Park is the vast green oasis of New York City, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling urban life. Located in the heart of Manhattan, this iconic park spans about four kilometers, stretching from 59th Street to 110th Street and is 800 meters wide, between Fifth and Eighth Avenue.

During the spring and summer months, Central Park comes alive with vibrant energy. The park’s winding paths lead you through scenic spots, magical music performances, and lively activities. Along the way, you’ll discover stunning viewpoints overlooking the lake, with views of architectural landmarks, bridges, and lush greenery.

Central Park is a hub for both relaxation and recreation. Visitors can be seen jogging, biking, or enjoying various sports, while others relax on the grass, sunbathe, or read a book. The park’s serene beauty provides a perfect setting for picnics, outdoor concerts, and even theater performances in the summer.

Transportation in New York

New York City is known for its extensive and diverse transportation options, making it easy to get around the city. Whether you're a tourist or a local, there are several modes of transport to choose from:

The New York City subway is one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to travel around the city. With over 450 stations and 24-hour service, it connects all five boroughs, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.
